Technical Art & UX Design for There is a Field

Overview

In 2016-17, I helped build There is a Field with Krista Sanders and Kevin Cheng. Combining contemplative reflection and meditation with connection, players color a scene in VR and reveal thought-provoking questions that they are encouraged to answer. Uncovering prompts also uncovers other players’ anonymously recorded responses, thus connecting individual experiences together.

"Out beyond ideas of rightdoing and wrongdoing, there is a field. I will meet you there."
- Rumi
The experience starts by feeling like a simple meditative experience—an immersive coloring book in virtual reality. The player is greeted with a serene scene and peaceful music yet, something else is in the background, ever changing as the player moves through the scene. Sounds, like voices, but more like murmurs.

As the player colors more of the scene, introspective prompts are revealed such as, “what is at the heart of your story?” When a prompt is revealed, so are answers from other players past. The murmurs were thoughts that could have been from anywhere, from anyone. It is then the player is prompted to contribute their own thoughts and then discover more prompts.
